Kerala Porutham is the traditional South Indian marriage-compatibility system — dasa porutham, the ten-gate birth-star test run on the nakshatra and rasi of bride and groom before a wedding is agreed. It reports which of the ten gates pass, which fail, and what each gate means for the match.
Porutham (பொருத்தம் — "agreement/fit") is the marriage-matching tradition of Tamil culture, practiced for centuries across Tamil Nadu and in parallel across Kerala. Where northern matching scores eight kootas for 36 points, the southern system weighs ten named gates — dinam, ganam, mahendra, stree-deergha, yoni, rasi, rasi-athipathi, vasya, rajju and vedha — each reading a different channel of the marriage.
Traditionally the two horoscopes were written on palm leaf and compared star to star. The astrologer recited the porutham results aloud — which gates pass, which require remedy — and a sufficient tally (classically a majority, often five or more) let the alliance proceed. Rajju and vedha were treated as hard gates even when the score otherwise looked good.
| 1 | Dhina porutham | The day-star count — the bride's nakshatra counted from the groom's must land on the blessed positions. It weighs health, harmony and the prosperity of the household the two will build. |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Gana porutham | The temperament match — every nakshatra carries a deva (divine), manusha (human) or rakshasa (fierce) nature; the two must sit in agreement. It reads the couple's natural disposition toward each other. |
| 3 | Mahendra porutham | Counted from the groom's star to the bride's — the gate that blesses the family line: children, long life and continuity of the house. |
| 4 | Sthree-Dheergha porutham | The bride's star must stand beyond the ordained distance from the groom's — the gate weighing the wife's wellbeing and comfort in the new home. |
| 5 | Yoni porutham | The animal-sign of the two stars — horse, deer, elephant, tiger... the gate of physical and instinctive compatibility between the pair. |
| 6 | Rasi porutham | The moon-signs themselves — how the two rasis stand to each other by house, read for harmony or friction in daily life. |
| 7 | Rasi-athipathi porutham | The friendship of the two moon-sign lords — the ruling planets must be friends or neutral; enemy-lords flag friction at the lord level. |
| 8 | Vasya porutham | The mutual draw — whether each sign 'responds' to the other, reading the pull and the balance of influence between the partners. |
| 9 | Rajju porutham | The hardest gate — the two stars must not share the same rajju (the 'rope' binding the marriage). Same-rajju pairs are the classical break-test even when other gates pass. |
| 10 | Vedha porutham | The repellent-star check — certain nakshatra pairs are vedha (they 'pierce' each other) and are barred outright, whatever else matches. |
Enter the two births — date, time and place — and the module computes each nakshatra from the moon's longitude, then evaluates the classical porutham table. The result lists every gate with its verdict so you see the reasoning, not just a score.
Dina, gana, mahendra, stree-deergha, yoni, rasi, rasi-athipathi, vasya, rajju and vedha — the ten gates the Tamil tradition weighs on the two birth stars.
The tradition holds that a majority should pass — commonly five or more — with rajju and vedha treated as hard gates: a fail there outweighs a good score elsewhere.
Both are star-based matchings — the southern dasa porutham weighs ten named gates, while the northern Ashta-Koota scores eight kootas for 36 points.
