What is Upashruti?

Upashruti is the Sanskrit term for a sound, word or sign that is heard unexpectedly and interpreted within Indian omen traditions.

Meaning of the Sanskrit term

The word has several historical meanings including "hearing", "report", "omen" and, in some classical contexts, a nocturnal or oracular voice.

Nimitta, Shakuna & Upashruti

Nimitta is a general sign, Shakuna often involves birds and animals, and Upashruti focuses on what is heard or overheard.
